moving on...

hey LQ, i have that article written by sumiko tan also, its quite an old article rite? i kept that piece of article too :p

thot the place we went is "out of the pan"? it's "out of the box"?

yah..think PW is rite. we should move on and not stay in the past..

but, i really can't help it ar. all those momories just keep coming back. 3 yrs. neither long or short. i think i'll need more time to move on..

have all of you moved on already? looking to the present and forget the past..

Saturday, January 29, 2005

we can't always keep looking on the past, can we?

i've been thinking (what? you think my head empty is it?), are we having the right attitudes here? see, what we do when we meet up is to complain or lament our lack of duties, and say how much we miss sp and our lecturers.

maybe we harbour too high expectations. obviously none of us have been an intern before, so we don't know how it would feel like. some even imagine ourselves to be fixing broken bulbs (that's shisi), photocopying copious amounts of double A paper and mindless receptionist work. well yes, some of these jobs do happen but what else can the company give you?

i can't expect myself to be thrown into the thick of the action -- discussing campaign details, negotiating with clients, doing up mind-blowing advertisements, etc. etc. on the company's part, they don't really have a specific idea of what you can or cannot do, so to play safe, they'll just give you simple stuff, then you graduate on to the more important jobs.

oh i don't know... but i can't help but think my job is boring! plus, the client is troublesome! why can't they deal us ALL the changes they want? they have to request one change, see that in action, then request a second change, then see that in action, and so on and so forth, how inconsiderate. it's like they think we're just sitting around with nothing to do waiting for their approval. hello? people have to do data entry here?!?!?

i think my company quite chapalang and nondescript. so below radar. so uneventful. so un-media like. so cold (literally). so boring. sigh.

meetup

the entry i typed last night was gone! *hmfph* talk about technology...
anyway, the meeting up includes jess, fangying, yinghua, peiwen, shisi and me.
had dinner at OutOfTheBox, raffles city.
catching up with them was good.
i feel good.
work was not as bad.
but still, at the end of the day, we decided that we would not have want to stick around with our intern company.
at least not me. and i dun think fangying wants too.

Too old to make new friends?
By Sumiko Tan

The older I get, the more I value friends, yet the less time, energy and enthusiasm I have in maintaining old friendships and striking up new ones.

SUNNY, one of my dearest friends at work, will leave The Straits Times next month for greener pastures. He is not my first friend from the office to say goodbye.

Over the years, there have been a handful of colleagues who became friends. In recent times, at least three others have also left.

When Sunny told me that he was leaving, I moaned: 'With you gone, I will have hardly any friends left in the office!'

Which set me thinking: At what point does an acquaintance or colleague become a friend? And, to take a step back, what is this concept called 'friendship' anyway? Indeed, what makes you click with one person and form a friendship with him, but not some other?

If a friend is defined as someone I feel completely comfortable calling up at 3 am to bail me out of trouble - and Sunny will do so - then, alas, I don't have that many friends.

Other than family members, I can count on just one female friend and three, at best four, male friends.

But then, maybe that's plenty. As someone once said, one friend in a lifetime is much, two are many, three are hardly possible.

FRIENDSHIPS are different from relationships - and thank goodness for that. You can be great chums with your partner, of course, but a relationship is so much more complex.

It is not only about that enrapturing feeling called love, but - if you are unlucky - also a host of murky emotions like jealousy, resentment, anger, pain and despair.

Friendship is simpler and fills you, mostly, with harmless Type B emotions - kindliness, fondness, warmth and cordiality.

With a lover, you make demands and have expectations. But with a friend, you're cool. You don't really owe him anything, or have to explain much, because, ultimately, you demand nothing more from each other than pleasant company and an occasional listening ear.

Love, I read somewhere, is blind, but friendship closes its eyes. How true.

THE older I get, the more I value friends. Yet, ironically, I find that it is now not only harder for me to maintain old friendships, but also to form new ones.

When I was in school, friendships came naturally. My friends and I moved in a pack - we ate, studied, gossiped and partied together. We exchanged secrets and gifts, sent cards and gave treats. Our friendships were firm, and sweet.

Coming from an all-girls school, I didn't get to make male friends until I was in junior college. Initial shyness aside, I found that it was possible to have a platonic relationship with a guy, and that they made equally good friends.

By the time I went to university, I was already attached, and had little time to make new friends, male or female.

Then came working life. Through sheer proximity and the amount of time spent together, it was inevitable that some colleagues became more than co workers.

What is it that allows you to become friends with some people, and not others?Shared experience is one requisite, and the sharper it is, the better. For Sunny and I, it was our years spent pounding the same beat, politics.

That X factor called 'chemistry' is another, and I suppose this explains how you can be firm friends with people who are very different from you.

THE saddest thing about friendship is that it can die. It doesn't come with a lifelong guarantee.

Distance is one killer. Unless you are diligent in keeping in touch with a friend, being far away can drive a wedge in your relationship.

Changes in circumstance is another.

It has been said that a friend in power is a friend lost, and I have found this to be true. When a friend moves up in life, he will become too busy for you, while you don't want to risk rejection by trying to keep in contact with him.

Marriages have also caused friendships to fade as your spouse might not take to your friends.

Then there are friendships that die because they have simply run their course.

I had a close female friend whom I had known since we were both 17. About four years back, after 16 years of keeping in touch through the mail, long hours on the phone and giggly lunches, our friendship died. Just like that.

There was no quarrel, no disagreement, no underlying unhappiness or animosity or hurts. The plug was just pulled.

The last time we saw each other was at lunch - in fact, it was to celebrate her birthday. We were our usual loud selves. After the meal, we gave our usual hug, said our usual cheery goodbyes and made our usual promise to meet again.

We didn't call each other for weeks (which was normal, as we were both busy), then months (which began to feel a bit strange, but nothing to be alarmed about), then, yes, years (by then, it was too late to resuscitate the friendship).

We did talk once, last year, when my father died and she called. I was grateful to hear from her and I know it took a lot for her to pick up the phone after so many years.

I wish nothing but the best for her, and am always glad to hear from mutual friends that she is well. Yet, I know that if we were to bump into each other today, it would feel awkward.

IF I value friendship so much, why don't I just go forth and make more friends? It is easier said than done. People my age and older are busy with careers and family. I have fewer things in common with those younger.

But the fault is mine. At my age, I lack the energy and enthusiasm. Starting and maintaining a friendship might be far less arduous than a relationship, but it still requires effort. Do I have the strength for that on top of the other demands in my life?

So, next month, I say goodbye to Sunny and I am left with one friend fewer at work.

British writer Virginia Woolf once said: 'I have lost friends, some by death - others by sheer inability to cross the street.'

Should I spot Sunny - and my few remaining friends - on the street, I trust I can muster the energy to walk up to them and say 'hi'.

For, really, that is all it takes to keep a friendship alive.

hey SY,

sorry lah, din mean to make u feel bad. just that i'm really really glad to be able to escape from workplace and meet up with them. u noe, its only been a week, but i feel like i've been there for a month already! the rest should be able to understand how i feel rite? after i shared with you all abt the workings of my company.

ok, enough of all these already. lets meet up real soon, k? today say bye bye 3 times still can't bear to leave.. really missed u guys a lot!

Treasure the present

just went to my fren's grandma's wake. been to several wakes and funerals these few years, yet everytime the sadness is so unbearable..

i can't help but feel that when it comes to issues of life and death, some things just don't matter so much anymore.

i should tresure the present and not have any regrets when i look back. like what ms low had said during our pre-itp briefing: we should concentrate on what we are doing now and not be distracted by other things. don't complain that this is not what we want. don't keep living in regret that we should have taken our modules more seriously when we were in sch. just do our best in whatever we are doing right now. and that was what ms kwa reminded me again when i talked to her before the internship.

and i realised that the situation is not as bad as i thought. i should just enjoy these 3 months. it'll be over in no time. maybe by that time i'll miss my boss(!!) and colleagues and can't bear to leave the company :p

So, it's time to move on with more positive thoughts :)

But, i still miss sch and cut six.. So happy that we'll meet up on fri! :)

Time seems to crawl like a snail

its only wed! it seems like i've been working in the company for 3 weeks already!

had lunch with nashrin and val today. we are in different departments doing different jobs : nashrin in publishing doing writing, val in food and bevarage doing event planning, me in IT doing video; but we had one thing in common: WE MISS SCH!!

when is this internship going to end?

not even trying

i am not even trying to look or act busy. i am going to be a receptionist in 10 minutes' time. yay! -_- so restless that i don't even have the energy to "kao peh". i want to quit!!!!!

First day of work

hey hey everyone, how's first day of work? i started off quite well with lots of SMSes wishing me good luck since sun nite :)

but i was very nervous. very nervous.

nashrin called and we met to go up the company together. we reached at abt 830. but val reached abt 855, so we went up at 9 sharp.

i shall not say much abt the company here, coz i dun want my company to find out that i've been talking abt them in this blog (was it Ms Kwa who shared the story abt a girl being sacked for writing abt her company in her blog?) so we'll talk more when we meet on fri k? :p

in short, the ppl there are nice. but the whole atmosphere and culture is weird. i dunno, maybe the problem lies with me..

PW: yah..my company ppl also communicate thru email. i guess it saves the trouble of walking in and out of the room. one guy even stuck a note behind his chair: "Don't disturb. Just email me." Dunno if it's suppose to be a joke or not..

Jess: u got cool toilet, i got cool kitchen! yah, its a kitchen, not a pantry. lots of wine and glasses. super expensive (according to Val) hi-fi and TV set. shelves of books and video tapes. i think they even have a washing machine.

suddenly it occurred to me: this is a food and beverage industry! No wonder it has such a well-furnished and "classy" kitchen in its office..

After one day of work, this is my conclusion:

miss sch. miss classes. miss classmates. miss Cut Six..

the first of many

wah best... i've actually typed a proper entry but it didn't turn out. so i start ALL OVER again. this is why you shouldn't post during work hours. lesson learnt yeah -- better to not have Internet access during work (hor yinghua?)

anyways, i seem to be losing my touch. i was doing up my portfolio yesterday and decided to print out each page immediately after they were done, which means: do page one, print page one, do page two, print page two.

look where it's landed me!

i decided to show-off to my mother, expecting praise but in return, i got steered to three spelling errors and two missing words.

damnit!

i usually proof-read well but somehow was not in my element last night. i'm so depressed and embarrassed, nevermind that nobody saw or will never know about this had i not opened my big mouth, but i'm upset!

ok. shall calm down.

how was work for you guys? busy? haha. i'm quite bored, there isn't much to do. people don't communicate even though the company's so small, they use email all the time, like somehow it hurts to open their mouths. i shall go with the flow then.

i've been given the task of writing a thank you letter to their cleaning company, and shopping for gift baskets for chinese new year. sigh.

hey jess!

so touched that u remembered so much :p

why that day u left so early? din even stay behind to take pics and hv dinner together..

anyway, really glad that we came together as a group after much trial and error in yr 1 :p guess we all complement each other in some ways when we work on projects. Some are good at designing, some are good at elaborating, some are good at presenting (best presenter leh)..

jess, not only u must keep urself awake during attachment, u dun be LATE for work hor..

See u guys on Friday :)

walking down the Sb slope

hmmm.. finally got myself to post here... haha... very nostalgic previous articles... hehZ!

aiyah.. shd make my first post longer rite... hmmm. Actually during and after the test in mlt 12 and the final lesson w/ Rajan in T2235, i didn't really feel de significance of it being the last bits of my life in campus la... So i kinda left without much feelings... however when on the train and when i had nothing better to do than to reflect on stuff, the events kinda came back in flash-back form la, like the time we practised the lame mass dance in a room in T19 during orientation (dunno why the memory is extra-ly vivid in my mind.. redundant sia!), strangely i also remember yh wasnt here during orientations and came late for her very first lesson of the poly 1st year... den also remembered climbing around in toilets to take 'good' shots for the video, making you all walk up and down outside the business block for a shot on liqin and her friends walking together (the shot was only used for one second when u all walked in the sun for about half an hour or so...? hehe), mmr marathon, fy as the provider of food.... oyar... i will never forget how some of yooou attempt (unsuccessfully) to write my whole name on my hand while i am sleeping.... (i think pw came the closest? or was it fy...)... and being constantly and rudely interrupted from my precious naptimes (rrrarr)... and i also will definitely remember my sweet revenge when fy (fy leh!!) slept during lessons and i wrote "fang i love lucy" on her hand... aiyah.. dunno she remember anot... and i'll always link 'lucy' to fy sia... and you all threw my valuable collection of warning letters away for me when clearing my locker..!!!

memories work in such wierd manners... oh well, so guess i will miss you all la.... wish everyone luck in your internships! i have made a resolution not to fall asleep during working time... *nods*

welcome to chapter 4 of SY's life

chapter 1- when sy was a kid
chapter 2- when sy was in primary and secondary school
chapter 3- when sy was in poly, messin' up people's life
chapter 4- finishing (or soon) poly, heading to the reeeal world

**
it was tough for me, i tell you. separated from my friends, not attending lectures and tutorials. sounds insane but hey, it's the truth! all in all! i thought i could make do with 3 months away from you peeps. but heck, no. i cried like a baby when the moment called for. when i left BP for poly, i did not even shed a tear for my friends! amazing, ain't it? i guess we've shared so so much together. from my madness about ahemfabianahem to recently, TAUFIK. and fy's seriousness and no-nonsense time to her cheating cut6 of sixty cents times! we've the weirdest combi. the very heck-care jess to the very serious elder(!! :P) fy. different extreme ends.

though poly marks the end of my tertiary education (as of now), we are apart from each other; (ok, it's only me.) but still, that will not deter us from meeting up and gossiping (yeah, fy, i know you enjoy gossiping sessions more now!!) and repeating our mad idiosyncracies (plucked from pw's entry coz i still can't get the spelling right!!) over and over. perhaps we can continue on our cut6 video after internship. hahah you guys must be like "darn, sy's still keen on the vid after so long!" yeah, i am. it's the only way to show my descendants how fun a teen's life can be. ok, i am not teen but i am not the oldest here! lol

'nuff of my crap. shall spare you guys before i go. something from the bottom of my heart: you guys are definitely the ones that left footprints in me and my heart.

::that's what friends are for::

see no evil.smell no evil. eat no evil. enuff=)

seems like sadness is waiting to reign over the entire world.
tears overwhelm the entire day.
like what fangying had mentioned,
memories. the more you share, the greater the sadness when you depart...

and now presenting the lyrics of...
::+::that's what friends are for::+::

And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe I love you
And if I should ever go away
Well then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today and then if you can remember
Keep smilin' keep shinin'
Knowing you can always count on me for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for
Well you came and opened me
And now there's so much more I see
And so by the way I thank you
And then for the times when we're apart
Well then close your eyes and know
These words are coming from my heart
And then if you can remember
Keep smilin' keep shinin'
Knowing you can always count on me for sure
That's what friends are for
In good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more Ohh
That's what friends are for
Keep smilin' keep shinin'
Knowing you can always count on me for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for
Keep smilin' keep shinin'
Knowing you can always count on me oh for sure
That's what friends are for For good times and for bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Chapter closed

That's exactly how i feel right now. A chapter of my life has closed.

Didn't really feel so much until we stepped out of MLT 12 after NCT test. The whole week had been so busy. Shopping for office wear, preparing PP presentation, visiting IRAS, studying for NCT..

Somewhere at the back of my mind i noe this is going to be the last week we are together before we go for internship. But i so strongly felt the sadness only just now. Been telling myself that its ok, we'll still meet up and stay in touch; but just can't help feeling this sense of lost.. especially when i see everyone hanging outside MLT 12, taking pics, hugging.. even Norman seems so sentimental. Jiawei too, he even joined us for dinner. One of those rare moments..

Seeing Wenqi and SY cry makes me feel like crying too. But i managed to held back. Because once it starts, it'll be VERY difficult to stop.

Had never felt this kind of sadness before. i didn't even felt half as sad when i left sec sch and jc. But somehow this is so different. Maybe this time round we shared more memories together. The more memories, the greater the sadness..

The times we spent doing projects (which is what i remembered the most), all those late nights in sch (in T22 computer labs..), from ICP to ICM (not forgeting MMR when we overnight at SY's hse), seeing each other 6 days a week, 8 hours a day during ICM, Cut 6 VS F4, shopping and eating, scribbling in my calendar and treating it like a forum, numerous jokes among ourselves, crazy times and moody moments, the laughter and the squabbles..

the list goes on..

We really went thru good times and bad times together, i'm so glad to share my Poly life with you all, thanks for all the memories :)

All the best, Cut Six! And F4 too :p All the best for the attachment, hope to see all of you real soon..

one door closes, another opens

well we're finally done with poly... don't know if u guys feel the same way but time only started to fly when we got to year 2.5, don't you think? for me, year one seemed very far away, can't remember much anymore. maybe because we weren't so close then.

what can i say? i know this post is going to sound very cliched, but i know i certainly would want to have any other group or any other class for poly... haha... even though our class isn't the most united (look at 02 -- three years, three class t-shirts), but we still have our unique lovable idiosyncracies. lol.

time to concentrate on our internship, poly isn't over yet! if you fail IP, have to repeat next year. haha.

anyways, i think we have done almost all the things we wanted/planned to do right? 'cept for the trip to Asia-Pacific Breweries, that would have been really cool. =)

is someone going to post any pictures here? manee princess?

still hanging on

i'm fine with the bbq. what i don't like was the fact that i smelled of the smoke. when i reached home, my housemate immediately commented that i smelled of bbq. thanks, housemate! lil' wonder cabbie uncle sped through my journey home!

but anyway, yupp. it's been a fun yet stressful, sweet yet bitter, happy yet sad, 3 long but not too long years for all of us. we went through trials and tribulations (okay, that sounds too serious) but then you get the idea.

oh fy, you've to wear formal? hmmm thought you don't have to coz your job scope sounds like you're the backstage person. but anyway, g2000 has sale. many other places have sale. if you have time, go town look look see see and BUY BUY!! :P IF you have time, that is!

Post BBQ blue

dunno is it coz yesterday the bbq too fun le, feeling a bit blue today.. does anyone share the same feeling? a sense of lost right after u enjoyed yourself too much and had lots of fun and excitement..its like u reach the peak already, so no choice but to come down.. hmm, i think nobody will feel like that bah.. i'm always the odd one..

but yesterday was really fun. think it will be the first and last time we gather like that.. dmc3bo4..

quite surprised to see jia wei, and to think that he did most of the cooking..

sad that we'll be going separate ways so soon..3 years seem to pass in a blink of an eye.. i dunno how i'll survive poly life without this "happening" class. especially cut six. i'll always remember the times we spent doing projects (most of the time), shopping, eating, watching movies, laughing, quarrelling, gossiping (yah, GOSSIPING) etc etc..

i dunno how u all feel.. i will really miss the days in sp.. though i have not been joining cut six for quite a lot of activities, but in my heart i really appreciate u guys and the friendship.. maybe i seem to not care for u all, but i really do. To me, u all are just as impt as my cf frens or any other frens..

hmm.. just received email from ms kwa that says i have to wear formal for my attachment.. argh..

and yah..got to work alternate saturdays from 9am to 1pm, normal working hours is 9am to 6pm..

anybody want to go shopping for office wear together?

about 10 days left

i'm like a countdown timer to our attachment DAZE. how are you guys feeling? i feel excited more than nervous now. i cannot wait to go into the company and experience working with so many people in different departments and learning. this has to be the first time in my entire lifespan that i say, "I LIKE LEARNING."
sounds so greek to me! haha

i asked rajan yesterday what will i be doing in the Studio Department and he mentioned something along the line of a Floor Manager, helping with the wardrobe, etc. wah! how nice if taufik is a Malaysian, right? then i don't have to be envious and jealous of wj ALL the time! hee hee :P but then again, if Taufik's a Malaysian, he will not even be famous, i assume. he probably will not get into the Malaysian Idol. but i think even if i am posted to be in charge of the wardrobe, helping stars with their outfits, it'll really be a LEARNING experience for me. learn more about the stars!! i don't even know any malaysian artistes!

perhaps. perhaps. perhaps. so many "perhap-s" filling my mind now.

i'm looking forward to our class bbq and our last week together. how nice, you guys can just meetup after a hard day at work. i see you peeps in the virtual world!
